How to Craft Stone Pickaxe in Minecraft

Stone Pickaxe in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Mining iron ore and lapis lazuli ore.

With a Crafting Table placed, 3 Cobblestones and 2 Sticks are what a Stone Pickaxe needs. The pattern to copy is three Cobblestones filling the top row and two Sticks stacked in the middle column. A single craft gives you 1 Stone Pickaxe. Count on 131 uses out of each one before it wears through.

Stone Pickaxe Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Stone Pickaxe is minecraft:stone_pickaxe. In commands the namespace may be left off, so stone_pickaxe works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p stone_pickaxe
Give several at once
/give @p stone_pickaxe 5
Give it to a named player
/give Steve stone_pickaxe 1

Cheats have to be on for Stone Pickaxe to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Repairing Stone Pickaxe

When Stone Pickaxe nears the end of its 131 uses, Cobblestone on an anvil is the ordinary fix, enchantments and all.

There is a cheaper way, and a catch. A grindstone merges two worn Stone Pickaxe items without costing levels, but it removes every enchantment while it does so.

The cheapest fix of all is Mending, which Stone Pickaxe accepts. Experience you collect goes into the tool rather than your level bar, and it keeps itself topped up.

Overview

The Stone Pickaxe is an upgrade over wood. It can mine iron ore and lapis lazuli ore. It has 131 durability. Stone Pickaxe uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

The stone pickaxe was already in the game in Minecraft Beta 1.0, the oldest release with an English language file to read, so this recipe is at least that old. The recipe itself last changed in Minecraft 1.16. Guides written before that release show a different set of ingredients for the stone pickaxe, so check the grid above rather than the video.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with cobblestone (mine stone with wooden pickaxe) and stick (craft from planks).

The Yield Per Stack

64 cobblestones is 21 crafts here, or 21 stone pickaxes once the grid stops. The recipe wants 42 sticks beside it. You keep 1 cobblestone for later.

Deepslate is the toughest thing on this list a stone pickaxe still drops. Diamond Ore breaks under it in 3.75s and leaves nothing behind, so that swing is wasted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Stone Pickaxe in Minecraft?
a Stone Pickaxe asks for 3 Cobblestones and 2 Sticks, and the work happens at a Crafting Table. The pattern above is exact, so match it square by square, and one craft produces one Stone Pickaxe.
What do you need to make a Stone Pickaxe from scratch?
Starting with nothing, a Stone Pickaxe costs 3 Cobblestones and 2 Planks. Everything else in the recipe is something you craft on the way there, over 2 crafts in total.
How long does a Stone Pickaxe take to break Deepslate?
A Stone Pickaxe breaks Deepslate in 1.15 seconds, against 15 seconds by hand, so 13 times faster. That is calculated from the block hardness and the tool speed in Minecraft Java 26.2 itself, with no enchantments and no Haste.
What blocks can a Stone Pickaxe mine?
A Stone Pickaxe mines 493 of the 510 blocks a pickaxe can break, and it unlocks 91 blocks no weaker material can touch, Iron Ore, Lapis Lazuli Ore and Copper Ore among them. The other 17 sit higher: 12 need iron (Gold Ore, Diamond Ore and Redstone Ore among them) and 5 need diamond (Obsidian, Block of Netherite, Ancient Debris, Crying Obsidian and Respawn Anchor).
Where do you find the materials for a Stone Pickaxe?
Here is where each part of a Stone Pickaxe comes from. Cobblestone: mine stone with wooden pickaxe. Stick: craft from planks.
How many Stone Pickaxes do you get from one craft?
The Stone Pickaxe recipe makes one Stone Pickaxe per craft.
What is the item ID for Stone Pickaxe in Minecraft?
The Stone Pickaxe item ID is minecraft:stone_pickaxe, and in a command you can drop the namespace and write stone_pickaxe on its own. Checked against Java 26.2.
What is the give command for Stone Pickaxe?
Use /give @p stone_pickaxe to put a Stone Pickaxe in your own inventory. Add a number on the end for more than one, and note that cheats have to be on.
What version of Minecraft added the Stone Pickaxe?
The stone pickaxe was in Minecraft Beta 1.0 already, the earliest language file that exists to check, and no release we can read is without it. Nothing about it has changed since: the pattern above is today's.
