How to Craft Stone Axe in Minecraft

Stone Axe in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Chopping wood faster.

The recipe wants 3 Cobblestones and 2 Sticks, and a Crafting Table to run it on. Read it row by row: two Cobblestones in the left and middle columns, then a Cobblestone in the left column and a Stick in the middle column, then a Stick in the middle column. The grid returns 1 Stone Axe. One lasts 131 uses.

Stone Axe Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Stone Axe is minecraft:stone_axe. In commands the namespace may be left off, so stone_axe works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p stone_axe
Give several at once
/give @p stone_axe 5
Give it to a named player
/give Steve stone_axe 1

Cheats have to be on for Stone Axe to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Repairing Stone Axe

Stone Axe lasts 131 uses, and it does not have to be thrown away when it runs low: an anvil and some Cobblestone put it back, and every enchantment on it stays.

Two worn ones can also be merged on a grindstone. That is the cheaper route and it asks no levels, but it strips every enchantment off, so it suits a plain Stone Axe rather than one you have invested in.

The cheapest fix of all is Mending, which Stone Axe accepts. Experience you collect goes into the tool rather than your level bar, and it keeps itself topped up.

Overview

The Stone Axe is an upgrade from wood. It has 131 durability and deals 9 damage. Stone Axe uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

The stone axe was already in the game in Minecraft Beta 1.0, the oldest release with an English language file to read, so this recipe is at least that old. The recipe itself last changed in Minecraft 1.16. Guides written before that release show a different set of ingredients for the stone axe, so check the grid above rather than the video.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with cobblestone (mine stone) and stick (craft from planks).

The Full Stack Sum

Counted per stack: 64 cobblestones, 21 crafts, 21 stone axes. You supply 42 sticks to go with it. The box keeps 1 cobblestone.
