How to Craft Diamond Axe in Minecraft

Diamond Axe in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Efficient wood chopping.

You need 3 Diamonds and 2 Sticks, plus a Crafting Table to assemble them on. The top row is two Diamonds in the left and middle columns, the middle row a Diamond in the left column and a Stick in the middle column, and the bottom row a Stick in the middle column. That comes out as 1 Diamond Axe. Durability is 1561, and that is how many uses one gets you.

Diamond Axe Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Diamond Axe is minecraft:diamond_axe. In commands the namespace may be left off, so diamond_axe works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p diamond_axe
Give several at once
/give @p diamond_axe 5
Give it to a named player
/give Steve diamond_axe 1

Cheats have to be on for Diamond Axe to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Repairing Diamond Axe

Those 1561 uses are not the end of the road. Feed Diamond Axe back onto an anvil with Diamond and it comes back up with its enchantments intact.

The grindstone does the same merge for free, at a price: it takes the enchantments with it. Fine for a plain Diamond Axe, wasteful for one you have put levels into.

Mending can go on Diamond Axe, and that is the only repair that costs nothing at all: the experience you pick up flows into the item instead of into your own level, so it never sees an anvil again.

Overview

The Diamond Axe has 1561 durability and deals 9 damage. Upgradeable to netherite at a smithing table. Diamond Axe uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

The diamond axe was already in the game in Minecraft Beta 1.0, the oldest release with an English language file to read, so this recipe is at least that old. The recipe itself last changed in Minecraft 1.21.2. Guides written before that release show a different set of ingredients for the diamond axe, so check the grid above rather than the video.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with diamond (mine diamond ore) and stick (craft from planks).

Per Stack

Work a stack down, 64 diamonds, and you land on 21 diamond axes. Bring 42 sticks along for the ride. Left over: just 1 diamond.

Everything on this list drops for a diamond axe, so the material buys speed and nothing else. Pumpkin is the quickest of them at 0.2s, which is 7.5 times faster than doing it by hand.
