How to Craft Stick in Minecraft

Stick in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Crafting tools, weapons, torches, signs, ladders and fences.

You need 2 Planks, plus a Crafting Table to assemble them on. Place them as two Planks filling the middle column. Done once, that is 4 Sticks. As fuel these are worth 100 ticks apiece: 128 of them clear a stack of 64.

Stick Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Stick is minecraft:stick. In commands the namespace may be left off, so stick works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p stick
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p stick 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve stick 1

Cheats have to be on for Stick to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

Sticks are one of the most common crafting ingredients. They are used to make tools, weapons, torches, signs, ladders and many other items. Stick uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

The stick was already in the game in Minecraft Beta 1.0, the oldest release with an English language file to read, so this recipe is at least that old.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with planks (craft from logs).

Stack Maths

Per craft 2 planks buy 4 sticks; per stack 64 buys 128. Nothing is wasted: craft 32 takes the rest.

Tips & Notes

  • The whole pattern fits inside a 2x2 box, so you can make Stick in the four crafting slots of your own inventory without placing a Crafting Table.
  • Shopping list: 2x Planks. Plan the Planks first: craft from logs.
  • You get 4 Stick per craft, so divide whatever you need by 4 to know how many times to repeat it.

Uses for Stick

What can you make with Stick?
Stick is an ingredient in 79 other recipes on this site, including Item Frame, Painting, Ladder and Armor Stand. The section above links to each of them.
Can you craft a Stick without a crafting table?
You can, and without a table: the 2x2 grid in your inventory is enough for a Stick. It is laid out as two Planks filling the middle column, which never leaves a 2x2 area.
Where do you find the materials for a Stick?
The materials for a Stick each come from somewhere different. Planks: craft from logs.
How many Sticks do you get from one craft?
The Stick recipe makes 4 Sticks in a single craft.
What is the item ID for Stick in Minecraft?
In Java 26.2 the Stick goes by minecraft:stick; stick without the namespace does the same job in a command.
What is the give command for Stick?
Use /give @p stick to put a Stick in your own inventory, or /give @p stick 64 for a full stack of 64. Cheats have to be on.
Is the Stick recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
It is the same recipe on both: 2 Planks at a Crafting Table gives you a Stick, in the layout shown above, 4 at a time.
Which recipe uses the most Stick?
Of everything on this site, an Item Frame swallows the most Stick: 8 Sticks in one craft. That is worth knowing before you decide how many to make.
What version of Minecraft added the Stick?
The stick was older than we can prove: already there in Minecraft Beta 1.0, and that is the oldest language file Mojang still publishes, so the trail simply stops. The Stick recipe above matches the current release.
