How to Craft Painting in Minecraft

Painting in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Wall decoration with random artwork.

Feed a Crafting Table 8 Sticks and 1 Wool and a Painting comes back. The top row is three Sticks, the middle row two Sticks down either side and Wool in the middle column, and the bottom row three Sticks. Expect 1 Painting from every craft.

Painting Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Painting is minecraft:painting. In commands the namespace may be left off, so painting works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p painting
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p painting 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve painting 1

Cheats have to be on for Painting to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

Paintings are placed on walls and display random artwork. The painting chosen depends on the available wall space. Painting uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

The painting was already in the game in Minecraft Beta 1.0, the oldest release with an English language file to read, so this recipe is at least that old.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with stick (craft from planks) and wool (shear sheep or craft from string).

Counting The Stack

Stack sum: 64 over 8 is 8 crafts, times 1 is 8 paintings. Have 8 wool ready as well. Craft 8 empties the box exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Painting in Minecraft?
8 Sticks and 1 Wool at a Crafting Table: that is the whole shopping list for a Painting. Lay them out exactly as the grid above shows, and one craft produces one Painting.
What do you need to make a Painting from scratch?
From raw materials only, a Painting comes down to 1 Wool and 4 Planks. The rest you make yourself, and it takes 2 crafts to get there.
Can you craft a Painting without a crafting table?
You need a table for a Painting. It is laid out as eight Sticks and a single Wool in the centre cell, and that takes 3 rows, more than the 2x2 grid in your inventory can hold.
Where do you find the materials for a Painting?
Here is where each part of a Painting comes from. Stick: craft from planks. Wool: shear sheep or craft from string.
How many Paintings do you get from one craft?
The Painting recipe makes one Painting per craft.
What is the item ID for Painting in Minecraft?
In Java 26.2 the Painting goes by minecraft:painting; painting without the namespace does the same job in a command.
Can you farm everything you need for a Painting?
Painting needs nothing you have to go find: stick from planks and wool from string. Set those up once and you can keep making painting.
What is the give command for Painting?
The command for Painting is /give @p painting. Add a number for more than one, so /give @p painting 64 hands you a full stack, and it only runs with cheats enabled.
Is the Painting recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
It is the same recipe on both: 8 Sticks and 1 Wool at a Crafting Table gives you a Painting, in the layout shown above, one at a time.
How do you unlock the Painting recipe in the recipe book?
The Painting recipe appears in your recipe book as soon as you pick up any one of the 16 items that trigger it in Java Edition, White Wool, Orange Wool and Magenta Wool among them. One is enough; you do not have to collect the rest.
What version of Minecraft added the Painting?
The files run out before the painting does. Minecraft Beta 1.0 is the oldest language file Mojang publishes and painting was listed in it. Today the game builds it from 8 Sticks and 1 Wool, as shown above.
