How to Craft Piston in Minecraft

Piston in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own block model. Pushing blocks when powered. Minecraft has used the name Piston since Beta 1.7.

On a Crafting Table, 3 Planks, 4 Cobblestones, 1 Iron Ingot, and 1 Redstone Dust turns into a Piston. Copy this shape: three Planks filling the top row, four Cobblestones in the left and right columns, a single Iron Ingot in the centre cell, and a single Redstone Dust in the bottom-middle cell. One go makes 1 Piston.

Piston Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Piston is minecraft:piston. In commands the namespace may be left off, so piston works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p piston
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p piston 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve piston 1

Cheats have to be on for Piston to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

Pistons push blocks forward when powered by redstone. They can push up to 12 blocks in a row. Piston uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

Minecraft has used the name Piston since Beta 1.7, the oldest release whose language file lists it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with planks (craft from logs), cobblestone (mine stone), iron ingot (smelt iron ore), and redstone dust (mine redstone ore).

The Stack Arithmetic

4 cobblestones for 1 piston scales to 16 out of a 64 stack. On top of that: 48 planks. Down to the last cobblestones, nothing spare.
