How to Craft Note Block in Minecraft

Note Block in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own block model. Playing musical notes when powered. Minecraft has used the name Note Block since Beta 1.2.

Feed a Crafting Table 8 Planks and 1 Redstone Dust and a Note Block comes back. Read it row by row: three Planks, then two Planks in the outer columns and Redstone Dust in the middle column, then three Planks. You end up with 1 Note Block each time. Burn it instead and one gives 300 ticks, which means 43 Note Blocks take a stack of 64 all the way through a furnace.

Note Block Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Note Block is minecraft:note_block. In commands the namespace may be left off, so note_block works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p note_block
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p note_block 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve note_block 1

Cheats have to be on for Note Block to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

Note Blocks play a note when clicked or powered by redstone. The instrument depends on the block underneath. Note Block uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

Minecraft has used the name Note Block since Beta 1.2, the oldest release whose language file lists it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with planks (craft from logs) and redstone dust (mine redstone ore).

One Stack, Counted

One stack is 8 goes at 8 planks each, which totals 8 note blocks. The recipe wants 8 redstone dust beside it. Nothing is wasted: craft 8 takes the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Note Block in Minecraft?
Bring 8 Planks and 1 Redstone Dust to a Crafting Table and you can make a Note Block. Lay them out exactly as the grid above shows, and one craft produces one Note Block.
Can you craft a Note Block without a crafting table?
You need a table for a Note Block. It is laid out as eight Planks and a single Redstone Dust in the centre cell, and that takes 3 rows, more than the 2x2 grid in your inventory can hold.
Where do you find the materials for a Note Block?
Each ingredient in a Note Block has its own source. Planks: craft from logs. Redstone Dust: mine redstone ore.
How many Note Blocks do you get from one craft?
The Note Block recipe makes one Note Block per craft.
What is the item ID for Note Block in Minecraft?
Note Block is registered as minecraft:note_block. Commands accept the short form note_block as well, and Bedrock spells it the same. Checked against Java 26.2.
What is the give command for Note Block?
/give @p note_block gives you a Note Block. Swap @p for a player name to hand it to someone else, and put 64 on the end for a whole stack.
What version of Minecraft added the Note Block?
As far back as the language files go, the note block appears under this name in Minecraft Beta 1.2 and not before. The recipe file cannot narrow that down, because 1.13 renamed every recipe file in the game. That pattern above is still the one the game uses.
