Overview

Dispensers fire arrows, splash potions, fire charges and more. They can place water, lava, boats and armor. Dispenser uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

Minecraft has used the name Dispenser since Beta 1.2, the oldest release whose language file lists it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with cobblestone (mine stone), bow (craft from sticks and string), and redstone dust (mine redstone ore).

The Stack Arithmetic

7 cobblestones for 1 dispenser scales to 9 out of a 64 stack. Bring 9 bows along for the ride. That leaves 1 cobblestone with no partner.

What do you need to make a Dispenser from scratch?
Starting with nothing, a Dispenser costs 7 Cobblestones, 1 Redstone Dust, 3 String and 2 Planks. Everything else in the recipe is something you craft on the way there, over 3 crafts in total.
Where do you find the materials for a Dispenser?
The parts of a Dispenser do not all come from one place. Cobblestone: mine stone. Bow: craft from sticks and string. Redstone Dust: mine redstone ore.
What should I craft first for a Dispenser?
For a Dispenser, start with a Stick: 2 Planks gives you 4 Sticks. After that the order is Bow, and then the Dispenser itself.
How many Dispensers do you get from one craft?
The Dispenser recipe makes one Dispenser per craft.
What is the item ID for Dispenser in Minecraft?
Dispenser is registered as minecraft:dispenser. Commands accept the short form dispenser as well, and Bedrock spells it the same. Checked against Java 26.2.
What is the give command for Dispenser?
/give @p dispenser gives you a Dispenser. Swap @p for a player name to hand it to someone else, and put 64 on the end for a whole stack.
Is the Dispenser recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
No difference to worry about: a Dispenser takes 7 Cobblestones, 1 Bow and 1 Redstone Dust at a Crafting Table on Java and on Bedrock alike, one at a time.
How many crafting steps does a Dispenser take?
A Dispenser takes 3 crafts once you count the parts: Stick and Bow, and then the Dispenser. The chain section above walks through them in order.
What version of Minecraft added the Dispenser?
Minecraft Beta 1.2 is the oldest release that calls the dispenser by that name. The recipe file cannot narrow that down, because recipes only became separate files in 1.12. What you see in the grid above is how it works in the current release.
