How to Craft Target in Minecraft

Target in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own block model. Emitting redstone signal when hit by projectile. The recipe first appears in the game's files in Minecraft 1.16.

Gather 4 Redstone Dust and 1 Hay Bale, then work it on a Crafting Table. Read it row by row: Redstone Dust in the middle column, then two Redstone Dust down either side and a Hay Bale in the middle column, then Redstone Dust in the middle column. One go makes 1 Target.

Target Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Target is minecraft:target. In commands the namespace may be left off, so target works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p target
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p target 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve target 1

Cheats have to be on for Target to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

Target blocks emit a redstone signal when hit by a projectile. The signal strength depends on how close to center the hit lands. Target uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

This recipe first appears in the game's own data files in Minecraft 1.16, and not in the release before it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with redstone dust (mine redstone ore) and hay bale (craft from wheat).

The Stack Arithmetic

Bring 64 redstone dust, leave with 16 targets, after 16 rounds of 4 for 1. The recipe wants 16 hay bales beside it. Craft 16 clears the box of redstone dust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Target in Minecraft?
The list for a Target is short: 4 Redstone Dust and 1 Hay Bale, worked at a Crafting Table. The pattern above is exact, so match it square by square, and one craft produces one Target.
What do you need to make a Target from scratch?
Starting with nothing, a Target costs 4 Redstone Dust and 9 Wheat. Everything else in the recipe is something you craft on the way there, over 2 crafts in total.
Can you craft a Target without a crafting table?
Not this one: a Target will not fit the inventory grid. It is laid out as four Redstone Dust and a single Hay Bale in the centre cell, and that takes 3 rows, more than the 2x2 grid in your inventory can hold.
Where do you find the materials for a Target?
A Target draws its parts from several different places. Redstone Dust: mine redstone ore. Hay Bale: craft from wheat.
How many Targets do you get from one craft?
The Target recipe makes one Target per craft.
What is the item ID for Target in Minecraft?
Target is registered as minecraft:target. Commands accept the short form target as well, and Bedrock spells it the same. Checked against Java 26.2.
Can you farm everything you need for a Target?
Target needs nothing you have to go find: redstone dust from witches and hay bale from wheat. Set those up once and you can keep making target.
What is the give command for Target?
Use /give @p target to put a Target in your own inventory, or /give @p target 64 for a full stack of 64. Cheats have to be on.
Is the Target recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
No difference to worry about: a Target takes 4 Redstone Dust and 1 Hay Bale at a Crafting Table on Java and on Bedrock alike, one at a time.
What version of Minecraft added the Target?
The target first appears in Minecraft 1.16: that release ships the recipe file and the one before it does not, out of every Java version Mojang still publishes. Nothing about it has changed since: the pattern above is today's.
