How to Craft Shield in Minecraft

Shield in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Blocking attacks. Minecraft has used the name Shield since 1.9.

Making a Shield takes 6 Planks and 1 Iron Ingot at a Crafting Table. The top row is two Planks in the left and right columns and an Iron Ingot in the middle column, the middle row three Planks, and the bottom row Planks in the middle column. One go makes 1 Shield. Count on 336 uses out of each one before it wears through.

Shield Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Shield is minecraft:shield. In commands the namespace may be left off, so shield works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p shield
Give several at once
/give @p shield 5
Give it to a named player
/give Steve shield 1

Cheats have to be on for Shield to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Repairing Shield

A used Shield still has value: put two together on an anvil and their remaining durability adds up, enchantments included.

Two worn ones can also be merged on a grindstone. That is the cheaper route and it asks no levels, but it strips every enchantment off, so it suits a plain Shield rather than one you have invested in.

Shield takes Mending, and once it does you can stop thinking about repairs: every orb you pick up goes into the item.

Overview

A Shield blocks incoming attacks when held in the off-hand. It blocks melee damage, arrows and some explosions. It has 336 durability. Shield uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

Minecraft has used the name Shield since 1.9, the oldest release whose language file lists it. The recipe itself last changed in Minecraft 1.21.2. Guides written before that release show a different set of ingredients for the shield, so check the grid above rather than the video.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with planks (craft from logs) and iron ingot (smelt iron ore).

The Stack Arithmetic

6 planks for 1 shield scales to 10 out of a 64 stack. The recipe wants 10 iron ingots beside it. Left over: just 4 planks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Shield in Minecraft?
6 Planks and 1 Iron Ingot at a Crafting Table: that is the whole shopping list for a Shield. The pattern above is exact, so match it square by square, and one craft produces one Shield.
What do you need to make a Shield from scratch?
Starting with nothing, a Shield costs 6 Planks and 1 Iron Ore. Everything else in the recipe is something you craft on the way there, over 2 crafts in total.
Where do you find the materials for a Shield?
Here is where each part of a Shield comes from. Planks: craft from logs. Iron Ingot: smelt iron ore.
How many Shields do you get from one craft?
The Shield recipe makes one Shield per craft.
What is the item ID for Shield in Minecraft?
The Shield item ID is minecraft:shield, and in a command you can drop the namespace and write shield on its own. Checked against Java 26.2.
What is the give command for Shield?
Use /give @p shield to put a Shield in your own inventory. Add a number on the end for more than one, and note that cheats have to be on.
Is the Shield recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
It is the same recipe on both: 6 Planks and 1 Iron Ingot at a Crafting Table gives you a Shield, in the layout shown above, one at a time.
What version of Minecraft added the Shield?
Minecraft 1.9 is the oldest release that calls the shield by that name. The recipe file cannot narrow that down, because recipes only became separate files in 1.12. Nothing about it has changed since: the pattern above is today's.
