How to Craft Spyglass in Minecraft

Spyglass in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Zooming in to view distant areas. The recipe first appears in the game's files in Minecraft 1.17.

Gather 1 Amethyst Shard and 2 Copper Ingots, then work it on a Crafting Table. In the grid that is a single Amethyst Shard in the top-middle cell and two Copper Ingots stacked in the middle column. The grid returns 1 Spyglass. You cannot stack Spyglasses: one per slot, however many you carry.

Spyglass Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Spyglass is minecraft:spyglass. In commands the namespace may be left off, so spyglass works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p spyglass
Give several at once
/give @p spyglass 5
Give it to a named player
/give Steve spyglass 1

Cheats have to be on for Spyglass to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

The Spyglass zooms in when used, allowing you to see distant terrain and mobs. It narrows your field of view to a small square. Spyglass uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

This recipe first appears in the game's own data files in Minecraft 1.17, and not in the release before it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with amethyst shard (mine amethyst clusters in geodes) and copper ingot (smelt copper ore).

The Full Stack Sum

A full stack of 64 copper ingots gives 32 spyglass, across 32 crafts at 2 for 1. You supply 32 amethyst shards to go with it. Craft 32 empties the box exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Spyglass in Minecraft?
The list for a Spyglass is short: 1 Amethyst Shard and 2 Copper Ingots, worked at a Crafting Table. Copy the grid above cell for cell, and one craft produces one Spyglass.
What do you need to make a Spyglass from scratch?
Counting all the way down, a Spyglass comes to 1 Amethyst Shard and 2 Copper Ore, spread over 2 crafts.
Can you craft a Spyglass without a crafting table?
No, a Spyglass needs a crafting table. It is laid out as a single Amethyst Shard in the top-middle cell and two Copper Ingots stacked in the middle column, and that takes 3 rows, more than the 2x2 grid in your inventory can hold.
Where do you find the materials for a Spyglass?
A Spyglass draws its parts from several different places. Amethyst Shard: mine amethyst clusters in geodes. Copper Ingot: smelt copper ore.
How many Spyglasses do you get from one craft?
The Spyglass recipe makes one Spyglass per craft.
What is the item ID for Spyglass in Minecraft?
In Java 26.2 the Spyglass goes by minecraft:spyglass; spyglass without the namespace does the same job in a command.
What is the give command for Spyglass?
The command for Spyglass is /give @p spyglass, with an optional count after it. It only runs with cheats enabled.
Is the Spyglass recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
Yes, the Spyglass recipe is the same in both editions. Java and Bedrock both build a Spyglass from 1 Amethyst Shard and 2 Copper Ingots at a Crafting Table, in the same layout, one at a time.
Which material does a Spyglass need the most of?
A Spyglass needs more Copper Ingot than anything else: 2 Copper Ingots out of 3 items in total. Gather that first and the rest of the recipe follows easily.
What version of Minecraft added the Spyglass?
Mojang's own data puts the spyglass at Minecraft 1.17, the first release that describes how to make it. The Spyglass recipe above matches the current release.
