How to Craft Map in Minecraft

Map in Minecraft, drawn from the game's own item texture. Mapping explored terrain. Minecraft has used the name Map since Beta 1.6.

A Map costs you 8 Papers and 1 Compass, put together at a Crafting Table. The top row is three Papers, the middle row two Papers in the outer columns and a Compass in the middle column, and the bottom row three Papers. You end up with 1 Map each time.

Map Item ID and Give Command

The item ID for Map is minecraft:map. In commands the namespace may be left off, so map works too. Checked against Minecraft Java 26.2.

Give yourself one
/give @p map
Give a full stack of 64
/give @p map 64
Give it to a named player
/give Steve map 1

Cheats have to be on for Map to appear this way, and the same command works on Bedrock Edition, where the name is written the same.

Overview

A Map records the terrain around you when activated. Hold it and walk around to fill in unexplored areas. Map uses a shaped recipe: the ingredients only work in the pattern shown.

Minecraft has used the name Map since Beta 1.6, the oldest release whose language file lists it.

The materials come together from a few sources: you will be working with paper (craft from sugar cane) and compass (craft from iron ingots and redstone).

One Stack, Counted

Stack sum: 64 over 8 is 8 crafts, times 1 is 8 maps. Have 8 compass ready as well. It divides evenly, no paper left over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to craft a Map in Minecraft?
The list for a Map is short: 8 Papers and 1 Compass, worked at a Crafting Table. Lay them out exactly as the grid above shows, and one craft produces one Map.
What do you need to make a Map from scratch?
From raw materials only, a Map comes down to 9 Sugar Canes, 1 Redstone Dust and 4 Iron Ore. The rest you make yourself, and it takes 4 crafts to get there.
Can you craft a Map without a crafting table?
You need a table for a Map. It is laid out as eight Papers and a single Compass in the centre cell, and that takes 3 rows, more than the 2x2 grid in your inventory can hold.
Where do you find the materials for a Map?
The materials for a Map each come from somewhere different. Paper: craft from sugar cane. Compass: craft from iron ingots and redstone.
What should I craft first for a Map?
For a Map, start with an Iron Ingot: 4 Iron Ore gives you 4 Iron Ingots. After that the order is Compass and Paper, and then the Map itself.
How many Maps do you get from one craft?
The Map recipe makes one Map per craft.
What is the item ID for Map in Minecraft?
In Java 26.2 the Map goes by minecraft:map; map without the namespace does the same job in a command.
Can you farm everything you need for a Map?
Map needs nothing you have to go find: paper from sugar cane and compass from iron ingot. Set those up once and you can keep making map.
What is the give command for Map?
The command for Map is /give @p map. Add a number for more than one, so /give @p map 64 hands you a full stack, and it only runs with cheats enabled.
Is the Map recipe the same in Java and Bedrock Edition?
Java and Bedrock agree on a Map: both want 8 Papers and 1 Compass at a Crafting Table in the layout above, and both give one at a time.
What version of Minecraft added the Map?
As far back as the language files go, the map appears under this name in Minecraft Beta 1.6 and not before. The recipe file cannot narrow that down, because recipes only became separate files in 1.12. That pattern above is still the one the game uses.
